BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Hendrick's Gin, produced in Scotland since 1999, is generally considered one of the finest gins in the world, with a complex flavour that is totally unique. But just what makes Hendrick's so special? The answer has to do, of course, with the distillation method, which involves two separate types of still.
The pot still is the smaller of the two, and allows the essence of the juniper and other botanicals, which give gin its characteristic flavour, to pass into the liquid. After the first distillation, the alcohol level can be as high as 92%, but is gradually lowered to about 75%, after repeated distillation. The liquid at this point is heavy, oily, and very fragrant. This is ultimately blended with the liquid from the Carter-Head still, which produces a lightly floral liquid, by bathing the botanicals only in the vapour from the alcohol. By blending these two distillations, the complex, balanced flavour of Hendrick's is achieved.
Because the flavour of Hendrick's is so distinct, you don't need much to enjoy it. It can be drunk on the rocks, or with a splash of tonic. Interestingly, Hendrick's recommends using a cucumber, rather than the traditional lime or lemon, to garnish their gin and tonics. But however you enjoy Hendrick's, you'll be sipping one of the finest gins in the world.
