BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Although "moving pictures" were regularly shown in fairs and circus tents around the world prior to 1905, it is in that year in the us city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that the world's very first facility for showing nothing but movies opened.
Because the admission price was only a five cents, the theatre was called the Nickelodeon, combining the word for the five cent piece (a nickel) with the Greek word for theatre (odeon). The theatre was located in a converted store with a framed screen set up in front of a collection of 100 chairs. The first film to be shown was a 10-minute western called The Great Train Robbery which featured a scene that made audiences duck and scream: a gun being fired directly at them!
Because he didn't have to pay actors — and because the film was so short — theatre founder and former Vaudeville impressario, Henry Davis could keep the theatre open from 8am until midnight, packing in audiences. He soon was able to open 8,000 theatres, but as technology improved and screens got bigger, his storefront theatres were soon replaced by grand movie palaces — forever sealing the relationship between glamour and Hollywood.

Dinner will delight with beef tenderloin scallopini prepared via the sous vide method and served with black salsify root purée, truffle butter and veal jus. You'll return to the film satisfied and ready to watch its thrilling conclusion. When the credits are finished rolling, join your fellow guests in the library where any last signs of your hunger will be dispatched with Tahitian vanilla bean panna cotta served with wild forest berries.
