BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Žofín Garden is situated at one end of the stunning Neo-renaissance Žofín Palace on Slovanský Island and has some interesting history.
The Palace is an architectural jewel built in honour of Archduchess Sophie, Mother of Emperor Franz Josef I. Interestingly; the island itself isn’t even “natural,” having come into existence after the great flood of 1784. The first people to occupy it were leather dyers and the island was named Dyers’ Island. The island changed owners and purposes several times over the years until in 1835 Václav Novotný bought the island and pledged to turn it into a public place for recreation.
Dyers’ Island was visited by Archduke Franz Karl, the father of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Novotný renamed the island Sophie Island (Žofínský ostrov) after his wife. The new name was extended to a historically significant musical institute in Prague, the Žofínská Academy. The Žofínská Academy’s first public concert was held in Žofín Hall on March 18, 1841. Concerts, weddings feasts and a variety of music and dance events were held here, making it the cultural centre of Prague in the 19th century.
