BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Did you know the first person on record to climb to the top of Sugar Loaf is an Englishwoman named Henrietta Carsteirs? At the age of 39, she pushed herself through the rock and planted the flag of her country at the top of the 396 meter high mountain. The achievement came in 1817 and caused excitement in the city of Rio de Janeiro, by its daring nature or maybe because it aroused nationalist feelings in the Portuguese colonizers.
Motivated by this feeling, the day after Carsteirs' climb, Lusitanian soldier José Maria Gonçalves arrived at the top of Sugar Loaf. There, he switched the flag of the United Kingdom to the flag of the Portuguese Royal Pavilion.
