OzHarvest
OzHarvest
Distributing excess food that would otherwise be discarded to those in need.OzHarvest is a charitable organisation that rescues excess food from restaurants, retailers, food outlets and corporate kitchens that would otherwise be thrown away and delivers it for free to charities that feed the disadvantaged and homeless. The work OzHarvest does has a dual impact: it enables charities to reduce their food budget and redirect funding to education and rehabilitation, and it helps reduce carbon emissions by diverting good food from landfill to people in need. Each week OzHarvest collects around 20 tonnes of excess food, and it has delivered over 7.8 million meals using food which would have been discarded. Over 330 charities Australia-wide are recipients of OzHarvest rescued food. OzHarvest was established in November 2004 and with one van delivered 4000 meals in its first month of operation. It now delivers 180,000 meals a month across four cities (Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Adelaide) using 11 vans. Founder Ronni Kahn was named Australia's Local Hero 2010.
