BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Brighton Beach was originally known as 'Seven Mile Beach' but in 1874 was changed to Lady Robinson's Beach in honour of the Governor's wife.
New Brighton was named after the famous Brighton in England by the tramway pioneer, Thomas Saywell. Saywell also financed & built the public swimming baths, opened in 1928, a substantial picnic area, a race course & the Brighton Hotel on the current Novotel site. It was a huge success & to avoid confusion with the English Brighton it became known as 'Brighton-le-Sands'. Brighton Baths attracted many Sydney weekend holiday makers & the racecourse was popular with the punters who would cool off after a day at the races.
Brighton Baths boardwalk, where people jumped & slid into the water, was destroyed in 1966 by a freak storm hitting the coast. Today, there is still a swimming enclosure but no longer an elevated board walk to jump & slide from.
