BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
In 1933 the beautiful Manly Pavilion was constructed as a dressing pavilion and refreshment facility for the once-bustling Manly Pool.
The pool showcased entertaining pontoons, slides and treadmills. It was described at the time as “the finest swimming pool in Australia”. Huge crowds flocked to the pool, boardwalk, fun-pier and pavilion attracting 250,000 visitors annually.
The tea-rooms became a popular attraction in Manly Cove serving “dainty Morning and afternoon Teas, Hot & Cold Lunches, Refreshments and Ices at Moderate Charges”.
Our ye olde afternoon tea-drinking culture heralds from the British influence of the 18th and 19th century, well before the ‘über trendy’ Café scene came to fruition. Sadly the 1960’s and 70’s led the way for the café culture and brought with it the end to tea-rooms.
However the tradition of high-tea has been reinvented and today the tea-rooms at the Manly Pavilion are once again part of our iconic Australian culture.
