BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Manly was one of the first places in Australia to get a name. Captain Arthur Phillip, the governor of New South Wales who founded Sydney, gave it the title “Manly Cove” as a tribute of sorts to the confident, strong and all-around “manly” indigenous people who greeted him when he arrived there in search of fresh water (which he didn’t find there).
Nowadays, the peninsula is a favourite destination of Sydneysiders, as a holiday destination for those living in more rural areas, or a day trip for people living in the suburbs. It’s the perfect “city escape,” as it’s not only a great place for swimming, surfing and windsurfing, but the area is also known for its lively restaurants, cafes, shops, pubs and night clubs.
At the foot of Sydney’s northern beaches, Manly has a harbour beach, and one of Sydney’s longest and most breathtakingly beautiful ocean beaches, populated by surfers.
All in all, Manly’s sweeping coastline and lively spirit make it something to see – both from above, and from “sea level.”
